Daring and fearless, Captain Crave leads a band of pirates. He believes he’s got exactly what a pirate should have . . . until Mom sends him a clipping from a magazine. One of his mates goes through the list and he does have a ship, treasure, an eye patch, a hook, and a peg leg. But he’s missing one item – a pet! But what type of animal makes the perfect pirate pet? No one aboard knows, and so Captain Crave sets out to find just the right pet.

The question and answer format invites young pirates to interact with the story. The colorful artwork draws the eyes to explore subtle details, such as the ship’s figurehead scoring the captain’s dive or the goose forcing Captain Crave to walk the plank. The “Onward Ho!” at the end seems more western than piratical, but it entices readers to invent the pirates’ next adventure or to read the story again. This picture book is sure to be a favorite with little pirates.
